A Mother’s Day Reflection

This year with the approach of mother’s day, I find myself reflecting on how being a mother has been the greatest gift of all. It hasn’t always been the easiest job, but is by far my most treasured role. I found my life’s calling when I became a mother- and no matter what I accomplish through my life’s work, nothing will be as important as being called mom.

This year in particular has been a blessing as I watch each of my children embark on a new phase in their lives and I’m so happy to be there to share in these experiences with them. In celebration of these great changes, I wanted to take the time to send a message to each of my children that only their mother can give.

Lauren, I had so much fun this past weekend celebrating at your engagement party. It was the official kickoff to the next few months leading up to your marriage, and I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to celebrating with you. I know I’ve told you this before, but I don’t want you to get caught up in the details. So many times I have seen couples get so caught up in the drama that can accompany a wedding that they’ve lost sight of the most important thing – each other. A wedding is a beautiful way to celebrate, but when all is said and done, it’s about your commitment to one another. My wish for you is that you always make communication a priority and celebrate the little things that will make your marriage special. In the days and weeks leading up to your big day, be sure you take a few moments and remember that your wedding signifies the beginning of your union- not just a great party.

As a new husband, Matt, you are truly putting your all into your marriage and I am so proud of what a great partner you have become for your wife. Being raised by a single mom was certainly not easy, but you really understood the importance of being a good significant other. I know you got the message loud and clear that one of the keys to a successful relationship is putting others first, and seeing you put into action the many life lessons I’ve taught you makes me proud. I have really enjoyed watching you grow into the man and husband (and hopefully one day father!) that I’ve always known you are.

As we go through life, we know that none of our paths are ever going to take a straight road, and it’s how we grow from our life’s experiences that truly determines a person’s character. Nick, I have watched you take the struggles that life has thrown your way, and ultimately amongst hardship, built your true self. You have found yourself in business and taken charge of your own independence and happiness, and I have been behind you every step of the way. Continue finding that happiness every single day, and don’t forget to pay it forward to others when you can. Always know that no matter what, I love you unconditionally.

Chris, you are as passionate about your family as you are about your work. I’ve always said that you give people every ounce of your attention when you’re with them and the level of comfort and support you provide to your family is truly inspiring. You are a truly devoted father and provider. As Max continues to grow into a toddler and Luke is becoming a smaller version of you everyday, I hope that you are starting to realize that being a parent is as much about learning from your kids as it is about teaching them about life. Between you and me- everyone told me you were the most beautiful baby, and I still have to agree. I am truly in awe of your beautiful heart.

And to my own mother- thank you for being there for me when I needed you, and truly opening your horizons to support me through each stage of my own life, from childhood to raising my own family to the struggles I encountered in my career. I now look back and realize everything that you’ve done for me is more than I can ever list. For all the heartaches, sacrifices and everything in between. I’ll never know all that you’ve done for me- but thank you. I love you mom.
