It’s a Marathon, not a Sprint!

Today I’m going to brag a bit about my family, but I also want to talk a little bit about empowering—and empowered–women. First, the bragging part: Our home town, Cincinnati, holds a marathon the first Sunday in May called the Flying Pig Marathon. It’s a huge event—this year more than 43,000 participated in the weekend! Well, on Sunday, my daughter, Lauren, finished the 26.2 miles of the Flying Pig!

I was so proud to see her be successful at something she had trained for, for months. And the example that she has set for all of us, to set a goal, to work hard for it, and accomplish it, is truly inspiring.

But there is a lesson here for all of us: You know, it hasn’t been that long ago that women weren’t allowed to run marathons. Katherine Switzer broke ground some 50 years ago by being the first woman to register and run the Boston Marathon. In the Olympics, men have been running the marathon since 1896, but it took nearly 90 more years for the women’s marathon event to be added to the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Why? The so-called “experts” thought running would be bad for women’s reproductive systems!

Well, we know we’re stronger than that! But the same traits that let us run marathons, let us succeed in our businesses: Setting our sights on what we want to accomplish, coming up with a plan on how to do it, then work the plan.

A recent article in Inc.com looks at the primary trait that makes female entrepreneurs so successful, and it’s perseverance. Not every day is going to go smoothly, not every party is going to be a big sales day, but perseverance will get you where you want to go, whether it’s a financial goal, or a finish line.

Stay with it, it’s a marathon, but just like my daughter, you can do it!
