Learning to Be a Leader

You take on a lot of responsibility when you become a Pure Romance Consultant: Not only are you running your own business, but you are teaching others to do the same while you counsel the women who come to parties who may ask you questions that they may not want to ask anyone else, even their doctors.

That’s why it’s important for you to be a leader in your business, and in your life. An interesting article in Forbes talks about how women can send off the vibe of being a leader, without even saying a word. The Secrets of Leadership Presence for Every Woman Leader looks at what we, as women, can do to command a room without saying a word.

“We surveyed 25 rising women leaders and found that 65% identified leadership presence as a skill they are most eager to develop,” the authors said. The reason? They know that this is the one asset that will help them receive the respect in business they need and that they deserve.

So how do you project leadership? The article suggests three areas to work on:

  • Often, the articled says, women blame themselves if something goes wrong (“I wasn’t good enough”) while men blame someone – or something – else.
  • Establish your unique voice. Few of us like to hear our own voice, but it’s a good way for you to learn how others hear you. Record yourself talking: It can be as elaborate as a video of one of your parties, or as simple as hitting ‘record’ on your phone and talking into the screen. Listen to how your voice sounds. Do you use verbal crutches like ‘um’ or ‘you know?’ Work on sounding authoritative without sounding bossy. You can catch people’s attention just by speaking confidently.
  • Check your physical presence. Do you stand tall? When you meet someone do you look them in the eye? Do you engage in conversations? All these messages project a physical engagement with those aroundyou.

These are simple techniques that all of us can, and should, work on to stand out, to command attention, to look authoritative but confident. Giving a presentation? Ask for feedback. How did I do? It will help you refine your leadership skills.
