Ladies’ Night

Ladies-Night“Sometimes it’s the family you’re born into and sometimes it’s the one you make for yourself.” -Carrie, Sex and The City

When Sex and the City debuted in 1998, it truly helped revolutionize the way that women felt about talking openly about sexuality, sexual health and intimacy products. Suddenly, it was okay to talk about your favorite product because, Hey, Samantha and Carrie could do it – and at a cafe diner in the middle of the day, no less. Charlotte, Miranda, Samantha and Carrie were just normal everyday women like the rest of us, and although we all tried to guess which character we most resembled, the truth is there was usually a little of all four women’s traits inside each of us!

We all delighted in tuning in each week to see what new adventure these women were up to next. However, part of the appeal of Sex and the City was more than just the “sex” or the “city.” Many of us were also attracted to this amazing bond that these four women shared with one another. They had one another’s backs and set a wonderful example of how female bonding and solid friendships can help us navigate through the good and bad times in life.

The star of the show, Sarah Jessica Parker, recently did a cover story for Harper’s Bazaar and said she believed women loved Carrie Bradshaw because she was a really good (and deeply devoted) friend. Ironically, while many would think of Sex and the City as a sexually-edgy show, Parker still called it an “innocent time” compared to the cutthroat nature of the female casts of many of today’s reality television shows.

I have tuned in to my fair share of Reality TV and I tend to agree with Parker that many of the women on programs like the Trophy Wife and Real Housewives exhibit some extremely “catty” and disrespectful behavior. It’s so important for women and especially our youth to understand that these shows are built upon ratings and entertainment purposes only. The sooner we do this, the sooner we can get back to looking to other more positive role models in our society.

One aspect of Pure Romance that has always brought me so much pride is the special bond that our Consultants share with one another and all women. They truly get it. Whether it’s a new Consultant asking a seasoned veteran for her key to success, or a first-time party goer confiding to her Consultant about her intimacy issues for the first time in the Ordering Room – female empowerment and support is a theme that has been vital to the growth and success of Pure Romance since day one.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been on the road and had Consultants share stories about how they were going through a difficult situation and sister Consultants came out of the woodwork to listen and help. That says a lot about the kind of women who make up Pure Romance.

As I’ve experienced my mother’s declining health over the last year, there have been so many Consultants who have also sent me letters telling me they are keeping me in their thoughts and prayers. We stress this same support system here at home at our corporate office; staff members have gone through life-altering events and have received this same kind of support – whether it’s from a colleague across from their desk or a Consultant 1,000 miles away. I’m so proud of this bond our Pure Romance family shares.

I watched this most recently with the Slumber Parties acquisition. The Pure Romance Consultants welcomed these new Consultants with open arms – these are two sets of women who were competing for years, and to see them drop all of that and come together as one was incredible. They’ve put all of their differences aside and united for the betterment of all women.

I’d love to hear some of your stories of how other woman have showed you support and devotion in the last year. Please share your comment here and continue to lead by example! And if you want to bring a little Sex and the City into your own life, I encourage you to play Pure Romance’s “Ladies’ Night” – a fun tell-all game for Bachelorette Parties, girlfriend get-togethers or any occasion, which will teach you things about your best friends you’ll be surprised you never knew!

I recently had a Slumber Party crossover girl extend her support and friendship to me in helping me grow my fledgling business, all without any asking on my part. It came out of the blue! And I couldn’t be more grateful. 🙂
