Stop to Smell the Roses

I was away on business this past week in Charlotte and had dinner with a colleague and his wife, and she made a comment that I thought was very important and wanted to share. She had mentioned how her and her husband balanced each other well because he was always “going, going, going” and she was his laid back counterpart – the half of the whole that always kept things calm and steady.

She continued by sharing an anecdote about how one day she challenged him to leave his cell phone at home and while walking the dog, to really look around at the houses and take in the environment. When he returned, he told her that he had really enjoyed his walk and hadn’t realized one of their neighbor’s had a boat (a boat that she knew they had out there for years!).

This story really resonated with me because it not only applies to life, but also to relationships. So often, couples focus on the negatives – what they wish their partner would do or what’s missing and they don’t take the time to “stop and smell the roses” and take the time to appreciate the little things that make their partner one of a kind. Today, I encourage you to take five minutes to make a list of things you feel blessed to have because of your partner. If you’re happily un-attached, do so with a list about a friend or family member. This is not only a great way to keep that spark alive in your relationships, but also a wonderful way to count your blessings in life as a whole!
