The Modern-Day Love Note

The other day I was sitting at dinner with my daughter when she paused from eating to fervently type away on the keyboard of her cell phone. She later informed me that she was shooting a quick text message to a young man she’d recently met. It got me thinking about how technology has really transformed the way singles and couples interact and communicate. Gone are the days of sitting down to write a 10-page love letter to the object of your desire; nowadays, more and more men and women are turning to their phones as a way to add a little spice to their love lives. In fact, a recent survey actually found that 68% of the respondents send love notes via text messaging and 67% said they used texting to flirt!

When it comes to keeping things “spicy”, this can be a great way to drop a quick romantic note to the one you love. It helps couples to feel connected even when they’re caught up in the responsibilities of their hectic day-to-day lives. Also, if you’re a little on the shy side, it makes it much easier to send a sexy message that you normally would think twice about saying in person! Although this medium can bring a whole new dimension of romance to your relationship, here are a couple Dos and Don’ts that I’ve picked up along the way:

Dos:

  • Do send unexpected messages telling you miss them or are thinking of them
  • Do use texting to build up sexual tension throughout the day! This can be a great form of “mental foreplay” and will make it that much more exciting when you finally see one another.
  • Do indulge in picture texts – it’s up to you just how naughty or nice!
  • Do connect over the phone. Texting is a great romantic tool but nothing can replace hearing the sound of a loved one’s voice, or even better, communicating face-to-face.

Don’ts

  • Don’t text during a date; unless it’s a life-or-death emergency, this is far from polite
  • Don’t discuss a complicated relationship issue through texts; you’re just setting yourself up for confusion and miscommunication
  • Don’t “text stalk”! Know when to take a break; most people are too busy to be non-stop texting and it puts them in an awkward position if they have company or are in the middle of something
  • Don’t break up through a text message. If you love someone you should always try to treat them with respect even when things take a turn for the worse!
